Emma Remédios Lameiras
Conducting research at the intersection of materiality, culture, and science, Emma Remédios Lameiras’s journey into STS (Science and Technology Studies) began with an investigation of microorganisms as theory machines that challenge the bifurcations of nature/culture, subject/object, and human/non-human while also disentangling the bio-power relations embedded in the experimental practices of microbiology. Before joining JUST ART, she conducted ethnographic research in a microbiome engineering laboratory, where she analyzed the material, embodied, and affective dimensions of multispecies care in the context of the (micro)bio-politics of scientific-knowledge production.
As an artistic researcher, she leverages ceramics as her main medium and as a form of multispecies material engagement. She aims to marry her ceramic craft with her interest in microbial co-production to develop versions of multispecies ceramic-making. Her project will ultimately work toward a ceramic alter-praxis with microbes and alongside more-than-human temporalities, asking whether a climate-just alter-praxis can be realized for ubiquitous industrial materials such as the brick.
